Some significant inaccuracies
As a Family Medicine physician and public health professional, I was intrigued by this book. I read an interview with the author and the premise seemed interesting. I wanted to check it out not only for potential information for my patients, but also for myself, since I have had various digestive issues over the years.

First, the good: the book, while very basic info for me, will probably be a good resource for the average layperson. I like how she describes the function and importance of the GI tract, and the matter-of-fact way she talks about the health issues associated with the gut. I think it is a good resource for the average person. While her "program" is basically a brief food-avoidance regimen, I think probably some people who haven't read about such regimens before will get some interesting new information. For my part, I already avoid the majority of the items she mentions (alcohol, caffeine, soy, processed food, sugar, etc) but the book did inspire me to...
Worth reading!
First saw this book and its author featured on Dr. Oz. I don't typically buy things because they are recommended on a television show but what she spoke about made sense. There is a ton of great information in this book from a doctor that takes into account the whole person; a common sense meets science approach. The book is divided into three parts; Digestion 101, What's Gone Wrong In Your Gut? and On The Path To Gutbliss. She includes a list of foods to avoid (SAD GAS) Soy, Artificial Sweeteners, Dairy, Gluten, Alcohol and Sugar, foods to limit, and foods to include. A worthwhile investment.

Addresses _every_ issue!
I've had a digestive disease for the last 23 years. I've struggled with diet-related issues because of that more or less dramatically for that whole time. _Gutbliss_ is the first book I've ever read that is making a difference in that cause.

Using a conversational style, Dr. Chutkan explains the likely causes behind every common - and not a few uncommon - issues with the GI tract in a way accessible to someone like me without a medical degree. In every chapter, there's a story of someone she's treated successfully. She provides solutions that are reasonable and actionable.

I'm cautiously satisfied with my results of following her suggestions after only 8 days. That's pretty amazing considering I'm combating 23 years of disease.

I'm recommending this to every female friend I know who is interested in this subject and will continue to do so. I'll have a hard time sharing this book when I'm done!

A different way to live... it's a bible of better personal care
This is my third gut book in the past year and is the most helpful. It took a while to get used to the theme which is "live dirty, eat clean" but after a while it makes sense. A few things that caught my eye as good ideas in the area of having a profound effect on your external and internal microbiome::

-Get a bidet and quit taking so many baths.
-Make your own skin and hair products using stuff like coconut oil and manuka honey

There's details on whether you need a probiotic and which one to take. A lot of probiotics are not helping.

The recipes are low sugar. high fiber. The chocolate chip cookies made with almond flour instead of wheat flour are excellent. But the author does a great job of mixing up the things you can do with kale and other high nutrition ingredients.

Makes the point that it isn't that meat is bad for us but rather that lack of plant fiber is.

How Sick Are You? Ask Your Gut, Not Your Doctor
We live in a new age of weird diseases and symptoms -- many traveling under the "auto-immune" banner. People by the droves go to their primary care doctors and complain of stomach and digestive ailments (bloating, food allergies, abdominal pain), light-headedness, fatigue, skin rashes, eczema, rosacea, and worse. Their doctors, in turn, follow the protocols of their training and order up standard tests in search of something physical. The tests come back negative. Now doc is beginning to wonder if he has a hypochondriac on his hands, and the patients either persist or resign themselves to pain and misery, becoming depressed as symptoms continue to plague them. Sometimes more tests are ordered, but seldom is a solution found. It's a bad scene all around. We are lacking in good bacteria~Get in balance and feel better!
This book came just in time for me. It is written in clear easy to understand language. So many of todays common illnesses are due to the over use of antibiotics. I was a Microbiologist when working so I saw that all the time. I too am a victim of too many and I am paying the price now. If you have fatigue, bloating, constipation, brain fog, depression, weight gain and many more, it may be an imbalance in your intestinal flora. Little did our oarents know all those unnecessary antibiotics as a child could cause us so much trouble as adults.

I have so much highlighted and questions written in my book to ask my doctor about. I never knew thzt treating my acid reflux could cause so much damage. I hope to get off some medications and start the Live Dirty Eat Clean plan soon. Most likely since I am in such poor health it will be a long journey but I have found hope in this book that even very severe cases can at least make some improvement.

"Lift like a man, look like a Goddess" says the book. But is it true? I believe it is, and this book is right on the money. It is cleanly divided into three parts. The FIRST PART discusses the similarities between men's and women's bodies and why they should train the same. While women's muscles won't get as big as a man's from lifting weights, the stimulus to make a woman's muscle bigger and stronger is identical to that of a man's - overload the muscle with progressively heavier weights. PART TWO, "You aren't what you don't eat", is the eating/diet section of the book. Here you get a lot of nutrition info, such as calorie needs, protein intake, etc. and are introduced to the four "Ironclad Rules": eat breakfast, eat a total of 5 meals and snacks a day, have a post-workout recovery shake on the days you lift, and have more calories on workout days than the other days. Meal plans are nicely laid out for the reader. Lastly comes PART THREE, "Resistance is vital." This is the section...
Buy this book!
This book is written mainly by Lou Schuler, a journalist and strength and conditioning coach. Alwyn Cosgrove designs the workouts in the book and Cassandra Forsythe designs the meal plans and recipes. These are experts that I keep up with and respect very much so we're off to a good start.

WHO IS THIS BOOK FOR
This book says it's for anyone from beginners to experienced exercisers. I disagree that it's for all beginners. I think there is a lot to digest in this book and beginners might get frustrated and confused and end up putting the book down. However if you have the motivation I definitely think it's doable.

I'm not going to mention that they remind women they will not bulk up from lifting. I am so sick of this excuse from women and that we have to keep repeating it. Why are we still talking about this?? Is it not public knowledge now, even if you only read occasional fitness articles, that women will not bulk up like men if they lift like men...
Most successful book for me
New Rules of Lifting for Men was quite interesting, but I didn't do anything with it as it was so targeted at men. But I eagerly bought this new women's version, which is similar in some ways but overall is quite different and definitely targeted for women. I enjoyed Lou Schuler's witty writing style and offbeat humor, which made the information easier to digest and less dry. I read this entire book carefully front to back (important to do!!) and decided to implement co-writer Alwyn Cosgrove's workouts exactly as written and stick with it. One caveat: I think this book and its workouts is NOT for total beginners. In a way, you have to "arrive" at this book and the ideas it presents. I think if you were a newcomer to weight training you'd need some help with the exercises and proper form (particularly the squats and deadlifts, which must be done correctly to avoid injury). As a newcomer you would not have the frame of reference to appreciate the total brilliance of the...

If ADHD were a true biological disorder of the brain, why was the rate of diagnosis so much higher in America than it was abroad? Was a child's inattention or hyperactivity indicative of a genetic defect, or was it merely the expression of normal behavior or a reaction to stress? Most important, were there alternative treatments that could help children thrive without resorting to powerful prescription drugs? In an effort to answer these questions, Wedge published an article in Psychology Today entitled "Why French Kids Don't Have ADHD" in which she argued that different approaches to therapy, parenting, diet, and education may explain why rates of ADHD are so much lower in other countries.


In A Disease Called Childhood, Wedge examines how myriad factors have come together, resulting in a generation addictied to stimulant drugs, and a medical system that encourages diagnosis instead of seeking other solutions. Writing with empathy and dogged determination to help parents and children struggling with an ADHD diagnosis, Wedge draws on her decades of experience, as well as up-to-date research, to offer a new perspective on ADHD. Instead of focusing only on treating symptoms, she looks at the various potential causes of hyperactivity and inattention in children and examines behavioral and environmental, as opposed to strictly biological, treatments that have been proven to help. A MUST-READ FOR ANY PARENT OR EDUCATOR
I am a Learning Specialist at a New England Prep School -- Vermont Academy. I am also a Freestyle Skiing coach. I have been working with high-energy "attention deficient" teens for 13 years. Doctor Wedge's book "A Disease Called Childhood" validates all of my beliefs and gut instincts about our society's lack of patience with the natural maturing process of adolescents -- particularly males, the overprescription and dangers of amphetamine meds, and the precarious nature and overuse of the ADHD diagnosis in the first place.

Her book is a compelling and refreshing read with strong credibility.

Dr. Wedge and her book is an important voice that needs to be amplified through more readers asking more questions.

Aptly titled book!
A must-read for any parent with a child displaying so-called ADHD symptoms. Dr. Wedge cogently argues that these symptoms are not caused by a biological disorder (except in the case of brain damage) but are a child's response to stress in his/her life from such events as divorce or illness of a parent. As such, the child is best served by therapy addressing the stress and not by medication. This book is aptly titled and highly readable.

An excellent history of psychiatry's shift to a biological/medical focus...and the astounding effects of this change
Many of the negative reviewers are disagreeing with Dr. Wedge's statements in the book, but are not even discussing the facts she presents. Her discussion of American psychiatry's move from a psychoanalytic model of diagnosis and treatment to a biological model was enlightening. I am a pediatric occupational therapist and have worked with children diagnosed with ADHD for 15 years. I strongly believe that the environment in most American schools requires behavioral expectations for children that are developmentally inappropriate. (For example, children in preschool being expected to sit for 30 minutes for a circle time in class, or being expected to write their name before kindergarten, or kindergarteners being expected to write sentences...NONE of this is age-appropriate.) Wedge's book should be read for the information it gives into the history of why ADHD is being over-diagnosed at such alarming rates. We need to consider our cultural biases in America and truly look at making...
