If you understand what it's like to be caught up in the trap of binge eating, emotional eating, mindless eating, or the constant loop of dieting and binge eating, then this book is for you. Compulsive eating, then dieting, then cheating on your diet, then bingeing, then starting a new diet again is like being trapped in an undertow.  You might feel like you are constantly swimming against the current, only to find yourself exhausted and drowning. This book is your lifeguard. It will help you stop struggling, pull you out of the undertow and help you find peace around food and your body image.

Leora Fulvio, a psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of eating disorders has designed this book to be like your own pocket therapist.  Each chapter is both an assignment and an exploration that will help you get closer and closer to feeling like yourself again or feeling normal around food for the first time. It will help you to stand up and reclaim yourself against the tyranny of compulsive eating, emotional eating and binge eating.

Review :
Make Peace with Food
"Obsessing about food and my body kept me from living my life." ~ pg. 7

In "Reclaiming Yourself from Binge Eating," Leora Fulvio comes across as a very loving, thoughtful author. She truly wants to help anyone who struggles with binge eating due to a variety of causes.

This book will help you realize why you would binge eat in the first place. Many times it has to do with childhood issues. In fact I know two people who are binge eaters and both of them had food taken away or restricted when they were children. Some of the other issues explained in the book reveal that some people also try to get rid of negative feelings by eating a lot. So whatever your issue is it is probably discussed in this book.

Some of the very helpful advice in this book includes the section on clearing foods that are trigger foods from your house. There is also a list of 101 things to do instead of binging. There is also information on how to stop unhealthy thought patterns...
And Leora Fulvio explains that healing from a binge eating disorder is like breaking up with a boyfriend with whom you've had ..
"Breaking Up is Hard to Do," declares that old rock 'n' roll song. And Leora Fulvio explains that healing from a binge eating disorder is like breaking up with a boyfriend with whom you've had a dysfunctional relationship. She describes binge eating as if you were enmeshed with "Ed" (your eating disorder) who pretends to care about you but, as in all abusive relationships, is out to see you suffer. Recovery from binge eating is about separating from the tyranny of Ed and learning to live in peace and harmony with your food, your body, yourself.

In Reclaiming Yourself from Binge Eating: A Step-By-Step Guide to Healing, Ms. Fulvio, a marriage and family therapist, helps you negotiate your break up with binge eating and invites you to reflect on 34 steps that impart knowledge, hope, and guidance for recovery.

These 34 chapters include an exploration plus an assignment and cover topics such as: Balancing Self-Acceptance with the Need to Change;...
This is not a book about binge-eating
This is a book about finding out why you binge-eat, and how you can break the cycle and get control of your life.

Leora Fulvio writes from a very personal place describing her own struggles with food and emphasizes the fact that you are not alone in your struggle - millions of people also have the same issues. The good news is that many of them have also freed themselves from the cycle and so can you.

If you are looking for a "5 ways to stop binge-eating NOW" type book, this isn't it. This books requires some emotional work on the part of the reader, but the author has thought very carefully about the setbacks and pitfalls along the way, and has given a lot of advice about what to do in challenging social situations and what to do when you just want to give up.

The advice in the book is oriented specifically towards binge-eating, but her advice is so universal I think it can be applied to a lot of compulsive, unhealthy behaviors. The parts I...

Review :
If you eat out of boredom or loneliness, this is for you.
I've lost all the excess weight because of this book! The suggestions have saved me thousands and thousands of calories. It is a list of things to do instead of eat.

I used to think that I was a compulsive eater, but really, I didn't have any alternative behaviors to lean on in times of boredom, loneliness, or stress. The book taught me how important it is for my mental health to have hobbies, do puzzles, and play games. I used to think that those were frivolous and childish pastimes. Now I know it is a sign of a mature person who has positive coping skills. I have expanded the list to include what I really enjoy and what I can really get absorbed in. Computer Mahjong, the Rubix's Slide, clicker training my dogs, and blogging (I think blogging is suggested in the book). I'm so glad I read this book and put the suggestions into practice. I can't recommend this book enough.

Also, if you are stuggling with an addiction of any kind, I believe you would benefit from...
A Book for Stress Eaters
I saw this book in the Washington Post. A few days later I actually hear the author on the radio. She seemed to make a lot of sense. I was surprised at how much this book described my stress eating to a tee. I can identify with many of the stories. I keep the book in the kitchen and read it when I'm tempted to eat because I'm nervous or stressed out (which is often!). It's helped me a lot.

A great resource to help stop mindless eating

This unique obcject delivers overtake out prospect, this has become a amazing upgrade on me personally, The thought came securely as well as speedily Elena Vanishing: A Memoir

As heard on NPR's Diane Rehm Show!
Seventeen-year-old Elena is vanishing. Every day means renewed determination, so every day means fewer calories. This is the story of a girl whose armor against anxiety becomes artillery against herself as she battles on both sides of a lose-lose war in a struggle with anorexia. Told entirely from Elena's perspective over a five-year period and cowritten with her mother, award-winning author Clare B. Dunkle, Elena's memoir is a fascinating and intimate look at a deadly disease, and a must read for anyone who knows someone suffering from an eating disorder.

Review :
ELENA VANISHING is a must-read
Every day Elena Dunkle is disappearing. Her need to be skinny and appear perfect overtakes every other aspect of her life. When she’s in high school, Elena is hospitalized for her eating disorder, but that doesn’t stop her --- she doesn’t eat the food she’s given and she checks her makeup constantly. Even though she is far from cured, she is released and continues on with her life. Striving to be the perfect daughter, Elena works hard in everything she does. She thrives off of the compliments and envy of others. However, this doesn’t erase the memory of the other daughter --- Elena’s older, runaway sister, Valerie. It also doesn’t erase the memory of the tragic event that happened to Elena when she was only 13-years-old --- the event that started her quest to be perfect.

Elena continues this quest when she goes on to college. Unfortunately, her eating disorder, hard class schedule and several jobs keep Elena constantly exhausted...
LOVE
I love this book, I read the mothers point of view in HOPE first. I will say that hope was much better then this book. But this book is still really good.

Heard Elena and her mother on NPR and came home and ordered this book and the one written by her mother. Excellent reads! Brings much light to the battle with eating disorders, and the need to continue working on treatment programs. Being able to read two sides of the same story was an added treat.Thank you to both mother and daughter for sharing this devastating and then very hopeful story.
