Easy to read, understand and follow
If you're a the type of person that likes to tinker on their car but you're not very experienced with the electrical aspect of things, this book is for you. This volume outlines several projects that someone might want to perform on their vehicle and gives clear, step by step instructions for how to do them. Even with minimal experience with automotive wiring, I will have no problem following the guidance in this book.

These are specific projects with detailed instructions, so if you're looking for a more generic guide on automotive wiring this isn't going to satisfy you, the first book in this series by the same author covers that subject and together the pair would make an excellent reference for the home mechanic.

Medium to advanced level projects.
First off a disclaimer: I was sent this book to review.

This is a well written book with quality diagrams and pictures.
The book starts with simple projects like adding interior lighting, and goes on to headlights, electronic gauges, cooling fans, upgrading the alternator and ultimately installing an aftermarket wiring harness.
Not only does the book deal with installing new projects, it also has large sections on testing existing wiring and switches to tell if they need repair/replacing. For example in the section on headlights, he has 6 pages on doing Voltage Drop Calculations to see if there are problems with your existing headlight wiring system, and if so, where exactly the problem is located.

I hope to put some of these projects to good use this fall.

This book is designed to give you step by step directions for some of the most common electrical projects. It uses terms that are easily understood and doesn't use overly technical terms. This book picks up where the installation manual that comes with aftermarket products leaves off. You'll find a lot of answers to what if scenarios as well as lots o photos and diagrams. good investment
Much of what I learnt early on about cars comes from reading this excellent book. I still have my 1981 edition and after paging through the newer ones I see that it is still a great way to teach. If it doesnt go into as much detail as you like it will certainly point you in the right direction. My kid will definetly get a copy from santa.

Misleading discription
Very disappointed with this book. After reading reviews and description, I was of the understanding that this book was a good learning tool. As it turned out it was nothing more than a kind of study guide with only questions and without an answer key. I contacted the shipper to see if the wrong book was shipped and was told it was the correct book. I have searched for more reviews or comments and have seen one that states "for hardcover version". I can't imagine the hardcover being different from the paperback. Has anyone else had this problem.

This is a very basic description of engine design, which is fine. The section on diesel engines details turbine engines more than anything else. Turbines are not really what I expected. The inclusion may be a positive or negative depending on why you want to read this.

Excellent text-book style piece of writing for anyone!
This book is very interesting for anybody interested in learning everything about modern automotive technology. It focuses mainly on the engine, drivetrain, suspension, steering, electrical and computer systems of cars. It does not really focus on the frame, body and interior of auto's. The book is great for the uninitiated and has plenty of examples and color figures. Duffy uses examples from Porsches to Toyota's and does a good job of defining every auto industry term. He explains basic car tools and teaches how to read auto specific repair manuals. If you are looking for information on cutting edge technology like fuel-cell driven cars, hybrid technology or composite body materials you won't find it. Although it is 1088 pages, to become an expert one would still need to read more books specifically geared toward certain categories like suspensions or transmissions. I would recommend this book.

Modern Automotive Technology
I read this book as part of a college class, I enjoyed the detail and step-by-step education it gave. The ASE Review questions and chapter review helped pin point areas that needed more study. Two negative points I should tell you about there is no answers to the review questions in this book and no NATF Outline for areas you need to know per (ASE) areas of knollege, (A1-A8). For a Basic to Mid Level education in Auto Mechanics this book covered what was needed. In this Day of buying alot of books to get an education. Buying one well rounded book Helped keep the money in my pocket.

a word of caution when buying this book.
This is not a review, but a comment on this item (I'm giving an average rating so i'm not skewing the statistics). If you want to buy used version from listed vendors, do make sure you are buying the text instead of the job sheets or workbook. They are both listed under the same title and ISBN number, the latter is considerably cheaper which caused me to purchase it. But it's not useful at all. Amazon really should improve how they are listing books in this kind of scenario.

Another Great Book From An Automotive Legend!!
I picked this up right when it came out and dove into the pages and the project (an 84' AR Spider). As per usual for Mr. Joseph, the writing is interesting and detail oriented without being needlessly complex. The photography is outstanding and final result is a book that explains the processes and the reason they are used well enough so that a novice (me) can get started and an expert (my friend) can learn a trick or two. If you are starting a project (or just thinking about it) pick up a copy immediately.

Automobiles naturally rust and are dented through the course of their existence and part of an auto-mechanic's job is to revert such damage. For a professional who wants a refresher or an amateur who wants to do it himself, "Automotive Bodywork and Rust Repair" is a highly valuable asset, not to be missed.

Excellent Introduction and Overview
I imagine this text becoming a classic on the subject. The author wrote plainly. He introduced bumping, filing, filling, grinding, patching, sanding, sectioning, welding, and more. Newer and older repair approaches are mentioned, if only in passing. The author also discussed advantages and drawbacks of an impressive variety of tools normally used in bodywork.

After reading this book, I feel confident enough to tackle rust remediation on my aging Chevy truck. I think this book communicated the principles well enough that I'll be able to get out of any trouble I might stumble into. And I'll surely avoid a lot of trouble altogether. Without this book, I shudder to think of the damage I would have caused had I gone straight to an auto parts store and tried to git-r-done.

The author seems to possess a patience and reverence for the work, and what it takes to do bodywork competently. This is not a 12-step plan for slathering filler and spray paint on your ride...

Where I started
This book is one of the most important I have read in a long time. I really had a positive experience with it.

My wife started staying home to raise our growing family and I have had to find ways to save money and make it on one salary. The breaks were going on my car and I did NOT want to put the bill on my credit card.

A guy at Church told me that disk brakes were easy. I should do them myself. I bought this book, looked on-line for vehicle specific directions (Auto Zone has a GREAT website), bought a ratchet set and got to work.

My friend was right. I replaced brakes and rotors and bought tools and books at it cost me less than it would have cost at a facility to get the brakes and rotors done for me. Plus, I was equipped to do it again and again.

This brings me to my first criticism of this book. She doesn't recommend you do your own brakes; even disks. That is NONSENSE. I am deducting one star for this.

Anyway, what reading...
Kindle edition is lacking
This review is specific to the Kindle edition.

Many of the diagrams are cut off when viewed in the e-book edition. It seems like little effort was spent when translating this into an e-book. It would have been easy to put the diagrams sideways on a separate page, or at least scale them to fit, but neither was done.

Fantastic Manual for car incompetents as myself!
I love this book.
Let me start off by saying this. I know how to fill up my gas tank. I know how to pop my hood. Literally, that is the extent to my car knowledge. I don't even know how to change a tire. My father was an auto-mechanic and never taught his children anything, he did all the work for us. I always took my car to the local quick change to get my oil change. I have relied on everyone else to take care of my vehicle for me, and I have to trust their judgment and what they ask to fix my vehicles.
I am an accountant. I have great business skills, am technologically advanced beyond my years and can type 117 words a minute. I (not bragging) am quite intelligent and had a great gpa throughout highschool and college. I just don't know a blasted thing about vehicles in any form.

I was having problems with the battery in my truck a few weeks ago. It was just not getting enough juice to start. I would do everything I knew to do and had people come examine it to...

Excellent, well-written book on automotive wiring
I've read just about every automotive book on the bookstore shelves and this is one of the best. The information is accurate and well written, photos support the written material with good clear color shots, and the information is easy to understand. This is the only book I know of that goes into any level of detail concerning DMMs for automotive use and why you should use them instead of a traditional test light. It also contains very good details on proper use of relays including circuit protection with clamping diodes (if you dont know what that is you will after reading about them in this book). Fuses, fusible links, wire, grounding, harnesses, its all here.

Often when reading automotive books, I get the feeling that the author knows what they are talking about but does a poor job of putting it into words that the reader can understand. Other times, the author doesn't know what they are talking about or they are just outright wrong. This book is NOT an example of...
Phenomenal!
When I originally ordered this book, Amazon quoted me 2 weeks longer than it arrived. Needless to say it arrived earlier than expected!

Absolutely phenomenal product here folks. It is written in a manner anyone can understand. The layout is just right, and the pictures match the content perfectly. If you're doing ANYTHING with electrical in a car, then this book will be a godsend. One of the best reasons to get this book, is the explanation of the author's journey by learning from trial-and-error, and proper warnings throughout each chapter so that the reader doesn't make the same mistakes the first time around (which can often be expensive to fix).

This is gold. I strongly recommend this book.

Highly recommended
This book is great. Having worked in the automotive field for many years now, I have read more then my share of electrical guides. Not one can compare to the content in this book.

The book covers everything from basic principles to tools, connections, installations, and troubleshooting; all of which are explained using real world situations and solutions with easy to read diagrams and pictures. Nearly every scenerio that someone could run into in the field is covered. Many myths in the 12 volt field are also laid to rest.

This book would be great for anyone with any level of electronic experience. Like I said earlier, I have been in the field for a while now....and even I learned a thing or two.

Well i have been working on cars for 18 year, started with my uncle who was an ASE Master Tech when i was 10 helping in his shop and went from there. the only reason i bought this book was the fact that im going back to school to get my degree in Automotive Systems and Automotive Management and this book was required for Automotive Systems. - off sudject some here but it really burns me up that companies now hire more based on a degree than experience but back on topic - anyway i have to admit after looking this book over i am very amazed at just how great its writen in terms of breakdown of systems and what they do and also the fact that it explain in depth where everyone can understand with out the auther talking down to the reader. its just a simple and amazing book that i would recommend to all mechanics, future students, as well as the average person. this book would be great just for someone that doesnt want to get ripped off by mechanics that are just after that $. if you know...
Great for automotive class.
We're reading this book in college, and it is for the most part detailed and accurate. Some explanations are confusing, such as the brake master cylinder valve names (each one is called something different by each manufacturer). Also, the author often uses Chrysler as an example, which makes automatic transmissions a little confusing. Their front clutch is GM and Ford's reverse clutch and their rear clutch is GM and Ford's forward clutch. Otherwise, the book is very informative, has some examples of problems, and has review questions for each chapter (so all the quiz/test questions come from the book). Unfortunately, some of the answers are buried somewhat obscurely, so you can't just read the bold words.

Overall, a great book for an automotive class. The only downside is that it's heavy (almost 1500 pages!).

An Essential Book for Everyone
The book runs through the basics of nearly every system in a modern automobile. It features excellent color illustrations as well as commentary when elaborating or sharing insight is warranted.

I was initially leery about purchasing such as expensive book, but I've already learned new things in areas I thought I had mastered. As a bonus, the book functions as a serviceable self-defense weapon in the form of a giant, black brick of doom. It also looks good on a bookshelf if you like to pretend you know how automobiles function.

I've used this book several times to walk myself thru changing rotors and disc brakes as well as changing a swing arm. Step by step instruction and very good pics to help you thru the process. A beginner may have more trouble than I did because I have some experience working on cars but is a good place to start if your willing to get your hands greasy.

Very little in the way of instructions
This manual ended up being more general than I had hoped. It only provides instructions for the more basic repairs and maintenance and any complex operation is not described in enough detail for a novice like me to follow along. The pictures are somewhat hazy and hard to follow. I guess that's typical for an auto repair manual, but I'd hoped for a bit more detailed instructions.

Helps a rookie
This manual helped me to fix the ERG valve on my 2004 Malibu when it became filled with Carbon (a common problem with many makes and models of cars). There are some repairs where I wish it broke things down just a little more for the non-mechanically inclined person such as myself, but I have always been able to make simple repairs on my own thanks to the walkthroughs in Haynes manuals.

This book is full of useful information. I got the same Information from 20 different books as a kid, but this one compiles it all. Definitely a good book, and a great investment for anyone who works on anything Internal combustion.

This book is a collection of articles writtten presumably by experts. However, most articles were written 10 or more years ago, so some points are outdated.
